Ensuring Safety and Inclusion with Our Nut-Free Policy

At First Unitarian Universalist RVA, practicing radical hospitality means ensuring our physical spaces are safe and accessible for everyone, including those with life-threatening food allergies. To protect our children, youth, and vulnerable adults, our entire church building is designated as a strictly nut-free facility. We kindly ask all members, friends, visitors, and rental groups to refrain from bringing peanuts, tree nuts, or any products containing nuts into the building. By cooperating with this policy, you help us live into our core value of community care, creating a worry-free environment where everyone can gather and grow together.

Years ago we became a nut-free building, and we need to remind ourselves of that, for the safety of all who come here. We have people in our congregation who have severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reactions to peanuts and/or tree nuts. If someone has a nut allergy it is not only eating nuts that can cause a severe reaction, just smelling the breath of someone who has eaten nuts or a product containing nuts can trigger anaphylactic shock (which can cause breathing and swallowing difficulties). Please do not bring in or consume items with nuts while in the building. Thank you.
